Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) or ‘chip technology’ is a relatively new innovation in sports timing. An RFID tag (also called a ‘transponder’ or ‘chip’) is able to uniquely identify each competitor. When passing over an antenna mat linked to an RFID reader the competitor’s tag powers up and automatically transmits its unique code back to the reader along with an accurate timestamp. This timestamp is then processed by race timing software to produce exact race results in an instant. The RFID sports timing system is typically composed of a reader, an antenna mat, a competitor tag and race timing software.
Recent development in sports timing RFID technology has seen the possibility of cheaper tags and improving reader performance. By using a dual frequency (DF)-combining low-frequency (125 kHz) ‘wake-up’ with a higher frequency (6mHz) ‘response’-more tags are able to be processed at once.
